Osteopathy in the Cranial Field

Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is a natural therapy aimed at restoring the structure and function of the body to a state of balance and health.  It was developed by Dr W.G. Sutherland as a continuation of the Osteopathic approach of Dr A.T. Still, who founded Osteopathy in the late 1800’s.

The treatment process involves a subtle manipulation to the small rhythmic motions in the tissues and organs of the body.  This feels like the practitioner is cradling different parts of the body using gentle pressure.  There is little movement perceived, and no massage or forceful movements are used.  The patient will often feel more relaxed and may even fall asleep during the treatment.

The areas of the body which will be assessed during the treatment include the bones, muscles, nerves, organs, and the connective tissue (fascia) which encases every part of the body.  The blood and lymphatic circulation and cerebrospinal fluid, are all affected by the function of these structures, as are the hormonal and immune systems.

Treatment is aimed at restoring function to a point where the patient is either symptom free or able to manage the condition themselves.  This can take approximately three to six treatments.  Acute conditions may require less treatment and chronic conditions may require ongoing management.  Osteopaths consult with other medical practitioners when further testing or x-rays are required

Our bodies are very good at accommodating stresses and strains therefore pain does not always arise immediately after an injury.  Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is a holistic approach, therefore treatment of previous injuries is included to relieve the current symptoms and reduce their recurrence.
