Children's Health
Osteopathy in the Cranial Field is a natural therapy which is very gentle and ideally suited to the treatment of infants and children.
Babies
During birth the baby is subject to enormous forces as the uterus contracts. The baby’s head normally re-moulds distortions shortly after birth whilst crying and feeding. If the birth has been long, difficult or a caesarean birth and the re-moulding process may be incomplete
The persisting strains within the baby may cause poor neural function or impaired arterial, venous or lymphatic flow. Some common problems caused by these strains include:
- Crying, screaming, irritability
- Sleep disturbances
- Feeding difficulties
- Sickness
- Reflux
- Colic and wind
- Change in behaviour eg: after trauma or vaccination
- Failure to thrive
- Constipation
- Symptoms associated with teething
- Neck stiffness and inability to turn the head
- Flat spots or misshapen heads
- Blocked Tear Ducts
Childhood problems can occur due to retained birth strains but also due to the knocks and bumps that all children encounter whilst learning how to walk, run and play. Natural therapy is the least invasive way to treat a child. Some common childhood problems osteopathic treatment can benefit include:
- Recurrent ear infections
- Recurrent infection including colds and flu
- Poor concentration, constant fidgeting and hyperactivity
- Asthma
- Recurrent bedwetting
- Knock knees and pigeon toes
- Headaches after orthodontic work
- Down's Syndrome
What to Expect from Treatment
Osteopathic treatment for babies and children is extremely gentle and relaxing. Children often show their relaxed state by falling asleep on the table. Sometimes, however, children want to move around or be picked up which can lead to irritability. This does not affect the treatment itself. After treatment children may be very relaxed or have a burst of energy (including hunger) followed by a good nights sleep.
